There are many insects, reptiles, amphibians, and tropical birds camouflaged in neon green. But, with all of nature’s bounty around us, it wasn’t an easy color for the first artists and dyers to replicate.
For the first time, synthetic neon green pigments were produced only in the 18th century. Containing high levels of arsenic and other toxic substances, they were bright but deadly. Monet’s use of emerald green may have contributed to his blindness in later life.
Ironically, today, the highly noticeable neon green is widely used in safety signs. Since 1868, when gas-powered traffic lights were set in front of the Houses of Parliament in London, neon green officially became a universal “Go” color. The neon green hex code is #39FF14.
