Natascha Baumgärtner: Weird and surreal things make reality less boring
Artists for VistaCreate is a project where we collaborate with artists whose work we admire and respect. Our second talent is Tascha Baumgärtner – a young illustrator based in Berlin. Natascha’s works showcase non-existent worlds that are so beautiful and kind, you find yourself wondering if there’s a way to get there and never come back.
Introduce yourself. Who is Natascha Baumgärtner?
I’m a 25 year old illustrator based in Berlin. I finished my studies last year and have been working as a freelance illustrator ever since.
How would you describe your illustration style? Most of your illustrations feature worlds that don’t follow reality. There are foxes with tails twice as big as the foxes themselves, there are tiny people dancing on a big human head, etc. Where do these ideas come from?
I think reality would be much more interesting with more weird and surreal things going on 😀 So I often add ‘funny’ elements if the illustration seems too boring.
How do you decide what’s going to be in your next illustration?
I always carry a little notebook with me, which is filled with new ideas. When I’m not sure what to draw I can always take a look inside.
Name your top three absolutely genius artists.
Charlotte Ager, Lisa Golightly, Valerio Vidali.
Who or what has influenced you as an artist?
My mother, who is a great artist 🙂
What’s your biggest creative dream?
To illustrate and write my own children’s book.
Do you have a favorite work of yours? If so, which one and why?
I usually change my mind every couple of hours.
What software and hardware do you normally use?
I usually work with Procreate on my iPad Pro.
What’s your attitude towards feedback? Do you seek feedback? How do you deal with negative feedback? Share some advice on how to make use of feedback to grow as an artist.
Sometimes, I’m a bit scared of feedback, but it always benefits my work. My advice would be to get as much feedback as possible — you can still ignore it if it doesn’t work for you 😀
What advice would you give yourself 5 years ago, knowing what you know today?
Just relax — everything will be going well!
Tascha’s art is already available in VistaCreate in the form of design objects! Easily find them in the Objects tab and use in your creative projects to achieve a dreamy and magical mood.
