Trying to figure out what image size you need for any particular purpose on social media – be it a post, an ad, a profile pic, a header or an ad – can feel a little suffocating. The key problem any marketer and social media manager is facing in their work is the ever-changing sizes for posts, covers, and ads, as well as constantly emerging new formats.

And while you can track the news and keep up to date with one or two of the social networks, when you are managing accounts on multiple platforms, you could really use all the image size information neatly tucked into one joint guide. And guess what – that’s exactly what this post is about!

Let’s break this one up in a few categories – first, basic profile info:

• Profile picture: at least 320 by 320 pixels
• Post image: 1200 by 628 pixels (estimated)

Next, you will need all the cover sizes for the variety of page types available on the platform:

• Profile cover image: at least 720 pixels wide
• Page cover image: displays at 820 by 312 pixels
• Page cover video: at least 820 by 312 pixels and between 20 and 90 seconds
• Event cover: recommended 1200 by 628 pixels
• Event video cover: between 30 seconds and 5 minutes

And finally, a brief overview of the most used ad formats on Facebook:

• Feed image ad: 1.91:1 to 1:1, at least 1080 by 1080 pixels
• Instant article image ad: 9:16 to 16:9, upload highest resolution available
• Instant article image ad with link: 1.91:1, at least 1200 by 628 pixels
• Stories image ad: 1080 by 1920 pixels
• Carousel ad: recommended at least 1080 by 1080 pixels

INSTAGRAM

With Instagram, the three most important image sizes you need to know are, of course, profile pic dimensions, post size and Stories resolution, so let’s get right to those:

• Profile picture: 180 by 180 pixels (est.)
• Posts: 1.91:1 to 4:5, recommended width at least 1080 pixels
• Stories: 1080 by 1920 pixels (est.)

With no page covers or other post or image types on the app, let’s move straight into ads. First, the feed:

• Feed square image ads: at least 600 by 600 pixels, up to 1936 by 1936 pixels
• Feed landscape image ads: at least 600 by 315 pixels, up to 1936 by 1936 pixels
• Feed vertical image ads: at least 600 by 750 pixels, up to 1936 by 1936 pixels
• Feed video ads: up to 4GB

Stories ads have been steadily gaining popularity with advertisers, as the users have been diving into the Story format more and more. The popular format is currently at around 400 million daily users with the amount of content posted to Instagram Stories set to exceed that shared in the feed. Story ad sizes for Insta are:

• Stories image ads: 1:91 to 4:5, at least 600 by 1067 pixels, recommended 1080 by 1920 pixels in .JPG, .PNG up to 30MB
• Stories video ads: 1:91 to 4:5, at least 600 by 1067 pixels, recommended 1080 by 1920 pixels in .MP4, .MOV up to 4GB and 60 seconds

TWITTER

The microblogging social network doesn’t have the myriad of image formats, so here are the key sizes you need to consider:

• Profile picture: 400 by 400 pixels (est.)
• Header: 1500 by 500 pixels (est.)
• Image posts: up to 5MB
• Animated .GIF posts: up to 5MB on mobile, 15MB on web

TUMBLR

If you are a Tumblr kinda brand, here are the essentials for the platform:

• Profile picture: 128 by 128 pixels (est.)
• Static images: up to 20MB, displays at 500 by 750 pixels, 1280 by 1920 pixels enlarged
• Animated .GIFs: up to 540 pixels wide, up to 3MB
• Video posts: 5 minutes per day, up to 100MB in .MOV, .MP4

PINTEREST

Here are the profile picture and pin size information for your most pinnable content:

• Profile picture: 165 by 165 pixels (est.)
• Pins: displayed at 238 pixels width, expanded width 600 pixels

YOUTUBE

This is all the YouTube channel image sizes you need to know:

• Channel icon: recommended 800 by 800 pixels, renders at 98 by 98 pixels; .JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .PNG (no .GIFs)
• Channel art: at least 2048 by 1152 pixels, recommended 2560 by 1440 pixels, up to 6MB
• Thumbs: at least 640 pixels wide, recommended 1280 by 720 pixels; .JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .PNG, up to 2MB

LINKEDIN

Here are the image sizes for illustrations on your personal and business LinkedIn pages:

• Profile photo: at least 400 by 400 pixels, up to 7680 by 4320 pixels
• Background photo: 1584 by 396 pixels
• Logo image: 300 by 300 pixels
• Cover image: recommended 1536 by 768 pixels
• Company photos: recommended 900 by 600 pixels

SNAPCHAT

Snapchat canvas dimensions are 1080 by 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio), and this is the size you want to use for your video and photo snaps, as well as ads.
